Auckland:  External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar was accorded a traditional Maori welcome in New Zealand ahead of his official engagements.
The Minister shared a video of the welcome on Twitter and appreciated the symbolism associated with it.
“Was honored to start my official engagements earlier today in New Zealand with a traditional Maori welcome. Deeply appreciate the symbolism of the convening of two energies together. The respect for customs and traditions is such an important aspect of our friendship,” he wrote.
The Maori welcome ceremony gives a visitor a window into the deeply spiritual traditions of the Maori people.

Jaishankar called on New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and discussed bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
“Pleasure to call on Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand. Conveyed the personal greetings of PM Narendra Modi. Discussed deepening our bilateral cooperation through focused engagement in areas of strength,” the Minister said in a tweet.
He also informed that the two leaders agreed on encouraging greater business collaboration and people to people exchanges.
Jaishankar expressed delight at participating at the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame Awards 2022 and the New Zealand launch of Modi@20: Dreams Meet Delivery.
The event was also attended by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, her cabinet colleagues and MPs.
