Gandhinagar: The death toll is rising in the Gujarat cable bridge accident. As per latest reports, more than 100 people died in the incident. Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel reached the location and evaluated the situation. He said that the incident occurred on Sunday at 6.40 pm. The cable bridge across Machu River near Mani mandir had collapsed when more than 400 people, including tourists, were standing on the bridge. The government clarified that women and children had also died.
An NDRF team arrived at the location for rescue operations. The NDRF IG Mohsen Shahidi said that two NDRF teams have also started from Vadodara Airport to Rajkot Airport. 50 people from the Navy and 30 fire force teams were also reached at Morbi. A 40 member force from Jamnagar Naval station has been appointed exclusively for the rescue operations. A special isolation ward has also been opened at the Rajkot Civil Hospital.
The eye witnesses say that many people who reached their home to spend the Diwali holidays have been affected by the accident. There are indications that the bridge collapsed as the number of people standing on the bridge exceeded its capacity.
After the incident, both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Draupadi Murmu had reached the location and expressed their condolences. The PM also announced financial assistance to the families of the dead and injured.
