New Delhi: Justice D Y Chandrachud took oath as the 50th Chief Justice of India. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Chandrachud, who retires on November 11, 2024, will have a tenure of two years. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and others attended the event.

Justice D Y Chandrachud is the second most senior judge of the Supreme Court. Appointed as a Supreme Court judge on 13 May 2016, D Y Chandrachud was a former Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and a judge of the Bombay High Court. He also served as the Additional Solicitor General of India until becoming a Judge of the Bombay High Court. His father Y V Chandrachud was the 16th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

D Y Chandrachud has twice reversed his father Y V Chandrachud’s judgments by holding that privacy is a fundamental right and cancelling the section criminalizing extramarital affairs. He was part of the Constitution Benches and Supreme Court judgments including the Ayodhya land dispute. Justice Chandrachud was also involved in the Benches related to the validity of the Aadhaar scheme and the Sabarimala issue.
