Thiruvananthapuram: Number of suicide cases in the jails are increasing. It is found that seven among the thirty two deaths took place in the jail in 2022 are suicides. It is alleged that there are not enough medical staff to look after the jail inmates.
As per the figures till 15 August 2022, thirty two jail inmates were died in different jails in the state and among them seven are found to be suicides. Fifteen cases have been reported from Thiruvananthapuram district alone and all these fifteen died while they were admitted in the medical college hospital for further treatment.
It is the responsibility of the Health Department to appoint enough medical and para medical staff in the jail department. It is said to be not working properly. It is also evident that the Government has not taken any steps to reform the health staff pattern of the jail.
