New Delhi: The Central Government against the verdict of the Top Court in relieving the defendants in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case. The centre filed a petition to the SC to re examine the verdict on the release of defendants from jail. Six suspects including Tamil Nadu native Nalini Sriharan were released.
The Supreme Court pronounced the verdict on 11th of this month. The petition alleges that the concession in the punishment was without hearing the argument of the Indian Government. The release of the murderers of the Prime Minister will give a wrong message to the world. Therefore, the verdict should be reconsidered.
The bench comprising Justices B R Gavai and B V Nagarathna pronounced the verdict. The court acquitted the arrested accused after observing that they had spent more than 20 years in jail. This period of punishment is sufficient. While pronouncing the verdict, the court also considered that Nalini is a woman. Apart from Nalini, Raviraj, Murugan, Robert Pius, Jayakumar, Ravichandran were released. The main accused in the case Perarivalan was released six months ago. The Top Court used special power of the constitution’s 142nd article for the release.
