New Delhi: Chief Justice DY Chandrachud announced the Supreme Court winter vacation decision. It has been decided that no bench will work as usual during the holidays. But the Chief Justice also informed that only one bench will be allowed to function if the need arises. The Supreme Court of India will go on vacation for two weeks from 19 this month to 1st of January.
The Supreme Court will be on vacation from December 19 to January 1. The Chief Justice has not considered the demand that some benches should continue to function during the holidays related to Christmas and New Year celebrations. The Supreme Court announced a complete winter break amid debate over long vacations affecting the disposal of cases. People’s representatives in the Rajya Sabha expressed their displeasure over the issue of unnecessary leave by the courts.
It is also notable that the Supreme Court’s announcement was made during the winter session, when discussions are in progress. People are worried because of pending cases. The mass vacation of the court was a practice during British rule, and the members had expressed their opinion at various times before the assembly. Union Legal Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had said in response to a question and answer session in the Rajya Sabha that the courts should take a policy decision considering the welfare of the people.
