New Delhi: Fifth submarine has been added to the Navy’s warship fleet. A Scorpion-class submarine named Vagir will now become a force in maritime security. Kalvari class submarine which is part of Project-75 was officially received by the Navy today.

Vagir is the fifth of the six Scorpion submarines that are part of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The Ministry of Defence took a record 24 months to get the submarine to the Navy. The submarine was built at the Mazagon Shipyard. French naval construction experts have also arrived in India and played a crucial role in the construction phase, the Defence Department said.

The construction of the submarine was completed on November 12, 2020. It became part of the Navy’s fleet after completing various stages of trials at sea from February 22, 2021. Shipyard officials said designing various equipment to work underwater and reducing the size of various machinery, unlike normal shipbuilding, was a challenging task.

India is strengthening its naval presence in the Indian Ocean-Bay of Bengal-Pacific region. The Scorpion submarines also give India a major influence in the Quad alliance.
