New Delhi – Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan is reportedly the frontrunner to lead Team India at the upcoming Asian Games in 2023, according to sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While Dhawan’s captaincy seems likely, the appointment of former Indian batsman VVS Laxman as the head coach is yet to be finalised.
The BCCI has agreed to send both the men’s and women’s cricket teams to the Asian Games for the first time in history. The prestigious tournament is scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8, 2023.
With the Asian Games coinciding with events like the Asia Cup and the Cricket World Cup, the BCCI faces a delicate balancing act. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is set to be hosted by India from October 5 to November 23, adding further complexity to the scheduling. Final decisions regarding player availability and team composition will be crucial in managing these overlapping commitments effectively.
While Shikhar Dhawan is emerging as the likely choice to lead the Indian team at the Asian Games, the role of VVS Laxman as the head coach has not been confirmed. Laxman, a former prolific Indian batsman, has been rumoured to join the team’s coaching staff for the tournament. However, official announcements have yet to be made regarding Laxman’s involvement.
