Fatorda : FC Goa, one of the most prominent football clubs in India, has announced the signing of Australian midfielder Paulo Retre. The central midfielder joins the Goan side after FC Goa agreed on an undisclosed transfer fee with his former club, Sydney FC, where Retre had achieved success by winning the A-League twice in 2019 and 2020.
Paulo Retre’s arrival marks FC Goa’s sixth addition to the squad this transfer window, following the acquisitions of Indian internationals Sandesh Jhingan, Rowllin Borges, Raynier Fernandes, Udanta Singh, and the promising young talent, Boris Singh.
Expressing his excitement about joining FC Goa, Retre said, “I have had some incredible years in my home country, playing at the highest level and winning trophies. Now, I believe it is the perfect time for me to push my boundaries further, and a challenge in India seemed like the best thing that could happen. It’s a new culture with new people and a club that shares the same passion for football that I have. FC Goa has a strong foundation and ambitious goals. It is one of the best clubs in the country, and Goa is a place where football is deeply ingrained in its fabric. It is an honour for me to represent them.”
FC Goa’s Director of Football, Ravi Puskur, expressed his delight at the completion of the signing. He stated, “We are pleased to have Paulo on board. He brings a wealth of experience and quality to our midfield. His comfort on the ball and ability to control the tempo of the game align perfectly with our style of play. Paulo’s versatility and proficiency in various positions will enhance the balance of our squad. I am confident that he will fit seamlessly into the team and prove to be an asset for us.”
At 30 years of age, Retre adds both quality and depth to FC Goa’s midfield. He featured prominently for Sydney FC, making 176 appearances in all competitions since joining them from Melbourne City in 2017. During his time at Sydney FC, Retre scored four goals, including a brace in a crucial 2-1 victory over Adelaide United during the club’s double-winning season in 2019/20.
Retre’s addition further strengthens FC Goa’s approach, providing additional flexibility and balance to the squad. The Australian’s versatility allows him to play in multiple positions, which aligns with the vision of FC Goa’s new head coach, Manolo Marquez. Additionally, Retre’s proficiency in set-pieces adds an extra dimension to the squad’s dynamism.
Apart from his domestic success, Retre brings a wealth of experience to FC Goa, having participated in the A-League since the 2013/14 season and featuring in the playoffs on seven different occasions. He also boasts four AFC Champions League campaigns under his belt.
With talented midfielders like Brandon Fernandes, Rowllin Borges, Raynier Fernandes, Brison Fernandes, and Ayush Chhetri also competing for places, Paulo Retre’s arrival is set to intensify the competition within the squad.
