Thiruvananthapuram: The Anchuthengu police have registered a case of incitement against Latin priest Eugene Pereira in the incident of the Ministers being stopped in Muthalappozi, Thiruvananthapuram. The priest who is the Vicar General of Latin Archdiocese is the only accused in the case.

Kunjumon, a native of Puthukurichi, had died when a fishing boat ‘Paralokamata’, capsized off Mudalappozhi estuary, Thiruvananthapuram. Three people are missing in the accident. Ministers V Sivankutty, Antony Raju, and G R Anil who later came to visit following the incident were prevented from leaving the accident site by the protesters. Minister V. Shivankutty had come forward with the allegation that Eugene Pereira had made an incitement statement. Sivankutty alleged that the people got angry after the priest arrived and that it was Eugene who gave instructions to stop the minister’s vehicle. Later, the Anchuthengu police registered a case voluntarily under section 153 of the IPC.

Boat capsizing accidents are common in Muthalappozhi. A protest was held against the ministers yesterday under the leadership of the Latin Church, who demanded that they take the initiative to find a permanent solution to this. The locals complain that there is a defect in the construction of the embankment in the area and that the government is not taking steps to solve it.

The government had earlier promised to install sign boards to mark the locations where the water is not deeper and removing extra sand and pebbles that had been deposited nearby. However, nothing of these assurances was fulfilled, nor was any steps taken to begin the quick rescue of the people trapped in the sea.
