Thiruvananthapuram: The funeral procession carrying the mortal remains of former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy began on Wednesday morning from, Puthuppally house, Jagathy ,Thiruvananthapuram, en route to Kottayam. The procession, carrying the mortal remains of the beloved leader, commenced at approximately 7:30 a.m. The body, which was airlifted from Bengaluru to the state capital on Tuesday, was kept for public viewing to allow people to pay their respects.

In light of the funeral procession, traffic regulations have been put in place in various areas near Puthuppally on Wednesday and Thursday. As the procession reaches Kottayam, the body will be kept at the District Congress Committee (DCC) office and Thirunakkara Maidanam, where the public can pay their last respects. Subsequently, the mortal remains will be transported to the leader’s residence in Puthuppally.

The police have implemented restrictions as part of the funeral arrangements, leading to the declaration of a holiday for schools in the Kottayam district on Wednesday afternoon.

The final rites for Oommen Chandy will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at Puthuppally Church, where a large gathering is expected to bid farewell to the revered leader. However, the state government is yet to decide whether to accord state honours to Chandy, as he had expressed his wish to forego any official honour at his funeral.
