Kottayam: The eagerly anticipated counting of votes in the Puthuppally constituency began today at the Baselius College Auditorium in Kottayam.
The counting was originally scheduled to start at 8 a.m., but a minor hiccup occurred as the keys to the strong rooms were changed, causing momentary concern among the election officials and observers present. However, this issue was swiftly resolved, and the strong room was eventually opened without any further delay.
Another minor delay was encountered when the counting machine arrived late to the counting tables. Nevertheless, election officials managed to address this issue promptly to ensure a smooth counting process. The media access to the proceedings was restricted to prevent any undue exposure of these minor inconveniences.
Initially, it was announced that the strong room would open at 7:30 a.m., with postal votes set to be counted by 8 a.m. However, due to the aforementioned delays, the counting process began slightly later than planned.
The counting process is organised across 20 tables, with different tasks assigned to each. Fourteen tables are allotted to the votes cast through electronic voting machines (EVMs), five tables for postal votes, and one table exclusively for the Electronically Transmitted Postal Ballots System (ETPBS) for service voters.
Puthuppally constituency comprises a total of 182 booths, and the votes from each booth are being counted consecutively in 13 rounds. This methodical approach is designed to maintain transparency and accuracy in the electoral process.
