New Delhi :The first review meeting of the expert committee appointed to study the joint Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly elections will be held today (September 23). Former President Ram Nath Kovind will be the chairman of the committee. The committee was formed by the Center to examine the issue of holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assemblies as soon as possible and give a report. The committee will also look into whether the constitution and any other laws and regulations should be amended to hold simultaneous elections.

A seven-member high-level committee will meet under the chairmanship of Ram Nath Kovind. The country will have to face many challenges when the nationwide elections are held. The committee will study in detail issues such as hung assembly, no-confidence motion and security issues. The first official meeting of the committee was held on September 6 at former President Ram Nath Kovind’s residence in Delhi. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal attended the meeting.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress Lok Sabha Leader Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, Former Opposition Leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, Former Chairman of the 15th Finance Commission N.K. Singh and former Lok Sabha General Secretary Subash Kashyap are members of the committee. Senior advocate Harish Salve, former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari and Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will attend the meetings as special guests.

Till 1967, there was a single election to the Assemblies and the Lok Sabha. By 1968, the political situation that the country had to face changed this situation.
