Bengaluru: A bandh is currently underway in Karnataka against the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, a group of farmers staged a unique and unexpected protest against Karnataka. These farmers expressed their protest by holding dead rats in their mouths, highlighting their frustration with the Karnataka government’s inaction regarding the bandh and demanding the release of Cauvery river water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu. The protest was led by Ayyakannu, the president of the National South Indian River Interlinking Farmers’ Association Tamil Nadu.
Similar protests were organized in various other parts of Tamil Nadu. In Thanjavur, farmers protested by making sacrifices in front of the Thanjavur district collector’s office. The Cauvery water dispute among the South Indian states has been ongoing for decades. The bandh today, on September 26, is in response to the Cauvery Water Management Authority’s order to release an additional 5000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days. The Supreme Court has also clarified that it cannot intervene in this order.
