New Delhi: The BJP’s national leadership on Friday (OCT 13) appointed Union Minister Kiren Rijiju as the in-charge of the Mizoram assembly elections. National Secretary Anil Antony and Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton will serve as the party’s co-in-charge for the elections in Mizoram, for which the notification was issued yesterday.
Voting for all 40 assembly seats in Mizoram is scheduled for November 7. The last date for the submission of nomination papers is October 20, and the counting of votes will occur on December 3. The term of the Mizoram Assembly will end on December 17 this year. In the last assembly polls held in November 2018, the Mizo National Front (MNF) secured 26 seats, while the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) won eight seats. The Congress secured five seats, and the BJP won one.
Along with Mizoram, four states are set to go to the polls next month: Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. In Chhattisgarh, the first phase of polling is scheduled for November 7, and the second phase will take place on November 17. Telangana will hold polls on November 30, Rajasthan on November 23, and Madhya Pradesh on November 17. These five states collectively have 7.8 crore female voters and 8.2 crore male voters, totaling 16.14 crore eligible voters. Among them, there are 60.2 lakh first-time voters. The legislative terms of these five states will conclude between December 2023 and January 2024.
