Ernakulam: The Kochi Water Metro has surpassed one million passengers, a remarkable achievement by KMRL within just six months of commencing service. The ten lakhth passenger, Sanha Fatima, a 6th-grade student from Mancheri, Malappuram, was commemorated with a special gift.
The water metro service was inaugurated on April 26, 2023, and currently operates with 12 boats. Routes include High Court Junction-Vypin-Bolgatty terminals and Vytilla-Kakkanad terminals, with the High Court Junction to South Chittoor route set to commence soon.
Significant progress is also being made in the construction of terminals at Fort Kochi, Mulavukad North, Willingdon Island, Kumbalam, Kadamakudy, and Paliyamthuruth. The Fort Kochi terminal is expected to be completed by December. KMRL has noted that the tender process for the Mattancherry terminal’s construction is advancing rapidly. Once this project is finished, it will facilitate 78 water metro boats connecting 38 terminals on 10 islands.
