Ernakulam: Higher Education Minister R. Bindu expressed that modern society encourages same-sex marriage. The Minister’s remarks were in reference to the Supreme Court’s recent decision, which did not grant legal recognition to same-sex marriages.

Minister Bindu highlighted that the concept of marriage has evolved over time and emphasized the relevance of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud’s views on the matter.

A five-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court dismissed petitions seeking permission to register same-sex marriages under the Special Marriage Act. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul supported the idea, while the other three judges on the bench, namely Justices S Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli, and PS Narasimha, opposed the legalization of same-sex marriage.
