Wild elephant attacks wreak havoc in Kannur, farmers demand swift action

Kannur: The threat of wild elephant attacks is intensifying in Kannur. The Pariputhodi and Puthiyangadi areas are witnessing an escalation in incidents. Local farmers are affected by the repeated attacks as these elephants jump onto their fields and destroy the crops. Many attribute the problem to the alleged negligence of the forest department.

This marks the fourth time within the last one month that a wild elephant has jumped over protective walls and destroyed the crops. Last day, a wild elephant ventured onto the farm of a lady named Kurupancheri Achamma, causing a trail of destruction in its wake and devastating crops such as coconuts and bananas. These wild elephants, access the area by leaping over the “aana mathil” (elephant-proof wall) designed to safeguard farms, heightening concerns even in populated regions.

Farmers have raised complaints with forest department officials multiple times, but they didn’t get a satisfactory solution. Many farmers have taken bank loans for their cultivation, and the continuous damage to crops has pushed them into a cycle of debt. The farming community is urgently calling upon the government to find a solution to the disturbances caused by wild elephants as soon as possible.
