Chennai: The Sri Lankan Navy arrested 37 fishermen from Tamil Nadu and seized five fishing boats. The arrests were made on allegations of crossing the maritime boundary into Sri Lankan waters. This incident marks the arrest of 64 Indian fishermen in 10 fishing boats by the Sri Lankan Navy in the current month alone.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin sent a letter to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, urging the central government to take necessary measures for the immediate release of the detained fishermen and their impounded boats.
Stalin’s letter emphasises that despite repeated requests to cease the arrests and seizures of boats, the Sri Lankan Navy continues to arrest Indian fishermen.
