Thiruvananthapuram: Writer and scholar Prof. SK Vasanthan will be honoured with this year’s Ezhuthachan award, the top prize instituted by the Kerala government in the field of literature. The award consists of five lakh rupees, a citation, and a sculpture.
Dr. Vasanthan, 88, was chosen for the award by a panel headed by Anil Vallathol, which had as its members Dharmaraj Adatt, Khadeeja Mumtaz, P. Soman, and Kerala Sahitya Akademi member secretary C.P. Aboobacker.
Born in Edapally, Ernakulam in 1935, as the son of Karunakara Menon and Saraswathi Amma, he is well known as a teacher and historical researcher. He served as a teacher at Kalady Sreesankara College and Kalady Sanskrit University.
Some of Vasanthan’s notable works include his translation of ‘Jean Christophe,’ originally written by Romain Rolland and based on Beethoven’s life, ‘Appan Thampuran – Oru Padhanam,’ ‘Padinjaran Kavyamimamsa Malayalikalku,’ ‘Nalappattu,’ ‘Samastha Kerala Sahithya Parishathinte Charithram,’ ‘Nammal Nadanna Vazhikal,’ ‘Kavyanuseelanam,’ ‘Praasavadam,’ ‘Cherussery Pranamam,’ ‘Pazhaya Then’ (a collection), ‘Arakkillam’ (a novel), and ‘Ente Gramam Ente Janatha’ (a novel)
