Kochi: The High Court has granted permission for two individuals serving life sentences to pursue LLB studies. Education is considered a crucial factor in the rehabilitation of the accused during their incarceration, as it can help them feel integrated into society and make better use of their time behind bars. The court also emphasized that the education acquired during this period can lead to a more promising life upon release.
Two prisoners serving life sentences for murder have been granted permission to pursue LLB studies online. Suresh Babu, who is incarcerated in the open jail in Cheemeni, Kannur, and V Vinoy, imprisoned at Kannur Central Jail, approached the court with a request to put their sentences on hold for educational purposes. Both had successfully passed the LLB entrance examination for the academic year 2023-24.
Suresh Babu was admitted to Malappuram KMCT Law College for a three-year course, and Vinoy was admitted to Srinarayana Law College, Poothotta, Ernakulam, for a five-year course. The court instructed their relatives to pay the fees and complete the admission process by visiting the respective colleges with the required certificates. The admission process has been successfully completed. However, the request for online studies was contested by lawyers representing Calicut University and MG University, who pointed out that online LLB courses are currently prohibited. Nevertheless, the college authorities expressed their readiness to provide classes to both individuals, citing the court’s order.
The decision was issued by a division bench comprising Justice A. K. Jayasankaran Nambiar and Justice Kauser Edappagath. The court emphasized that even prisoners have the right to live with dignity while incarcerated, and the right to education is an integral part of this right.
