Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has implemented new restrictions on the use of firecrackers during Diwali. The mandate requires the use of ‘green crackers,’ designed to produce minimal air pollution, following the recommendation of the National Green Tribunal.
The permitted duration for bursting firecrackers is limited to 8 pm to 10 pm. However, an exception allows for celebrations during Christmas and New Year, permitting firecrackers between 11:55 pm to 12:30 am. Additionally, the order emphasizes the responsibility of the State Pollution Control Board to take measures aimed at reducing air pollution. District Collectors and Police Chiefs are directed to ensure strict adherence to these government regulations.
Green crackers are manufactured using chemicals that minimize air pollution upon ignition. However, their production is limited, with only a few centers creating these environmentally friendly options. Firecrackers typically arrive in Kerala from Tamil Nadu.
