New Delhi: In an effort to control the surging price of rice, the central government has announced its plan to introduce ‘Bharat’ brand rice into the market. ‘Bharat Rice’ will be available for retail sale at Rs 25 per kg. This move comes as the average retail price of rice in Bharat stands at Rs 43.3 per kg, indicating a 14.1 percent increase over the previous year.

The government has previously marketed flour and pulses under the ‘Bharat’ brand. For the distribution of ‘Bharat Rice,’ the channels utilized will include the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED), National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF), and Kendriya Bhandar outlets.

On November 6, 2023, the central government had initiated ‘Bharat Atta’ at a rate of Rs 27.50 per kg, available in 10 kg and 30 kg packs. This decision was made following the rise in wheat prices.
