Thiruvananthapuram: Finance Minister KN Balagopal said that the social welfare pension in the state will be increased. The decision to raise the pension was disclosed in response to an urgent resolution put forth by the opposition, who demanded a discussion on the arrears of welfare pension.
“The pension can be increased to Rs 2,500 if the central government reinstates the slashed amount. It is not true to say that Joseph of Chakkittapara committed suicide because he did not get welfare pension. Joseph had received welfare pension in November and December,” stated KN Balagopal. The Finance Minister also mentioned that Joseph had attempted suicide earlier as well.
Meanwhile, the distribution of welfare pension has been stalled for the last five months in the state. The minister asserts that he will increase the pension again without even addressing the outstanding payments.
