New Delhi: The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, popularly called the Triple Talaq Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha where it is being opposed by opposition parties led by the Congress.

During the debate Union Law Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, said asked the MPs not to look at the Bill through a political prism of votebank politics.

Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “This is a question of humanity. This is for ensuring justice to women, dignity and empowerment to women and to ensure gender dignity and equality.”

Union Minister for Minority Affairs, Abbas Naqvi, said that the Bill will empower Muslim women to be empowered socially, financially, and also constitutionally. He said that the British brought personal law to divide and rule the country and the Congress also followed suit.

He also reminded the house that there is no Hindu personal law and we call our country a secular nation.

However, the opposition parties led by Congress are not at all happy to pass the bill in the Rajya Sabha.

They are terming the Bill unconstitutional and demanding it be referred to the Select Committee of Parliament. The attack against the Bill was led by Congress in collaboration with Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, BSP, Rashtriya Janata Dal, NCP, and Left parties.

The Bill is opposed by YSR Congress Party members and also by Janata Dal (United) and AIADMK of Tamil Nadu. Both JD(U) and AIADMK staged a walk out in the House against the Bill. Interestingly JD(U) and AIADMK are part of NDA.

Surprisingly, the Biju Janata Dal extended its support to the Bill.

The Lok Sabha had passed the Triple Talaq Bill on 25 July with 302 votes in favour and 82 against it.
