Home Ministry says that legal help will be given to those who are not included in National Register of Citizens

New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has said that the Center do not have any plans to detain anyone who are exempted from Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) list. On the contrary, the MHA said that legal aid will be given to those excluded.

The excluded persons can use all the legal options under the law to establish their citizenship for a period of 120 days. Till then they would enjoy every rights and entitlements of the country.

On Sunday, the External Affairs Ministry had said that no one will be termed as foreigners or become stateless because they have been excluded from the NRC.

An MEA spokesperson said, “Adequate Judicial process available for affected persons to appeal to Foreigners Tribunal within 120 days from Aug 31. To facilitate appeal, 200 new FTs to be functional from today, in addition to 100 already existing.”

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress is planning massive protests against the NRC on 7, 8, and 12 September.

On Sunday, MEA spokesperson had said that the NRC process was being monitored by the Supreme Court of the country. He said, “The process is being monitored by SC directly and the government is acting in accordance with the directives issued by the court. The Apex court of the land has itself set the deadlines for all steps that have been taken so far.”

There are 19,06,657 people who are excluded from the NRC which is raising a hue and cry from opposition parties. The move is to weed out Bangladeshi infiltrators who have crossed into India and enjoy government help which are meant for the citizens of India.

The excluded persons can appeal against the exclusion at the Foreigners Tribunals within 120 days.
