Mumbai: Bollywood actor turned Congress leader, Urmila Matondkar, has ended her short stint with party politics when she announced her resignation from the grand old party today. She said that party infighting and the leaking of her letter led her to take this decision.

Urmila Matondkar, who joined the Congress in March, had contested the Lok Sabha on the party ticket from Mumbai North constituency.

In a statement the actor and politician said, “My political and social sensibilities refuse to allow vested interests in the party to use me as a mean to fight petty in-house politics instead of working on a bigger goal in Mumbai Congress.”

She also said that her decision to quit stems after a confidential letter she wrote to then Mumbai Congress President, Milind Deora, was leaked and confidential information leaked to the media.

Matondkar said that it was ‘an act of blatant betrayal’ by the Congress party leaders. She accused the party leaders for not being apologetic or concerned.

Another major reason for her resignation is that the leadership had awarded the very same persons whom Urmila Matondkar accused for shoddy performance during elections. She said that the leadership in Mumbai is not committed to bring out a change and transformation in the party.

Urmila Matondkar was defeated by BJP’s Gopal Shetty during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. She could garner only 24.39% of the total votes polled.
