Mumbai: The Western Railways have taken a step ahead to promote Central Government’s initiative, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by recycling plastic into a beneficial product to the people.

The Churchgate station in Mumbai has installed three benches made of recycled plastic. According to a senior WR official: “It is perhaps the first time that recycled plastic is used in a core passenger amenity on Indian Railways. Following innovative and eco-friendly ways to curb the menace of plastic pollution, three benches made of recycled plastic have been installed at platforms 2 and 3 at Churchgate,” he said on Thursday. He also specified that these benches are strong and can bear a lot of weight.

In a bid to encourage people to stop using plastic, the railways had also installed special selfie points using ‘Plastic Hatela’ image at several railway stations of Western Railway’s Mumbai Suburban section, one of which was the Churchgate station.

WR has put up selfie points at Churchgate & Andheri stations on #BeatPlasticPollution. It will also be provided at Borivali, Bandra & Mumbai Central to make people aware of #PlasticBan in Railways (less than 50 microns).Tweet ur selfies in comment section along with #SwachhBharat pic.twitter.com/iW0kNdTY3v
