New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has deferred to look into the plea seeking women entry into mosques across the country. The court has adjourned it to ten days citing a special reason.
Many believe that this special reason is the coming Sabarimala verdict, which is expected to be announced in the coming week.
The plea seeking women entry into Muslim places of worship was submitted by a Muslim couple from Maharashtra. The court has sought a statement of the Central government concerning the plea. Government sources say that Attorney General K. K. Venugopal will appear before the court and explain the stand of the government.
When the plea was taken up by the court the opposite party, which is the Maharashtra Wakf Board, sought one month to give their stand on the plea. However, Justice Bobde adjourned the case to only ten days.
He also maintained that ten days are allowed on account of a special reason, which many believe might be the coming Sabarimala verdict. Justice Bobde’s decision comes after he consulted with Justice Abdul Nazeer.
Justice S. A. Bobde is slated to be the next Chief Justice of India after the incumbent Justice Ranjan Gogoi leaves office on 17 November.
