New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tribute to the architect of the Indian Constitution Dr BR Ambedkar on his 63rd death anniversary at the Parliament today.

“Ambedkar Ji gave a unique gift to the country in the form of Constitution, which is the cornerstone of our democracy. A grateful nation will always be indebted to him,” Modi tweeted.

pic.twitter.com/3CT5BJ3fEM

In a series of tweets, Vice President tweeted, “I pay my humble tributes and respects to the architect of the Constitution Dr. BR Ambedkar on Mahaparinirvan Diwas today #MahaparinirvanDiwas #BRAmbedkar.”

“Ambedkar was a champion of democracy. He was a staunch patriot, a nationalist and a humanist to whom upliftment of poor and downtrodden was an essential precondition to development.”

Upon India’s independence on 15 August 1947, the new Congress-led government invited Ambedkar to serve as the nation’s first Law and Justice Minister, which he accepted. On 29 August, he was appointed Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee, and was appointed by the Constituent Assembly to write India’s new Constitution.
