Kolkata: Writ petitions have been filed in Calcutta High Court over Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s statement saying Citizenship Amendment Act will not be implemented in the state, & advertisements over the same by the state government in media, using public funds.

Banerjee had assured that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and CAB will never be allowed in Bengal as long as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is in power and the register of citizens and the new legislation are two sides of a coin.
“We will not allow anyone to depot any person from the country. There will be no NRC and no division. There can’t be a divide and rule policy; nothing is bigger than the country. People can have big political slogans but the country should not suffer due to it. It’s a divisive bill and shall be opposed at any cost,” Mamata Banerjee said.
Meanwhile on Monday the High Court directed the Bengal government to file an affidavit by Wednesday mentioning details of the violence in the state over the enactment of the Citizen (Amendment) Act.
