Kolkata: The violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in West Bengal from 13 to 15 December, 2019, had led to destruction of Rs 84 crore worth property of Indian Railways.
The Eastern Railway in an affidavit informed a division bench of the West Bengal High Court about the huge loss suffered by the Railway department.
The Eastern Railways said it incurred a loss of Rs. 72.2 crore with maximum damage of Rs. 46 crore at Sealdah division.
The Malda division had a loss of Rs. 24 crore while Howrah division reported a loss of Rs. 1 crore. The affidavit was submitted after a PIL was registered seeking compensation for people and Indian Railways for the loss of property during the violent protests.
In a separate affidavit the South Eastern Railway said that properties wroth Rs. 12.75 crore was lost which includes trains, stations and tracks.
