Ahmedabad: A court in Sabarkantha district on Saturday asked to remove the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi following an application moved by the advocate representing the Prime Minister.
The case pertains to three civil suits moved by relatives of victims post 2002 Gujarat riots. A suit filed by a British family sought Rs 23 crore as compensation for the killing of three of their relatives. PM Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2002.
The civil suits for compensation were filed by kin of the victims, Shirin Dawood, Shamima Dawood (both British nationals) and Imran Salim Dawood.
Principal senior civil judge S K Gadhvi at the Prantij court said the plaintiff does not have reasonable grounds to establish their argument that the then CM Modi was present at the site of offence.
S K Gadhvi said,” A bare reading of the plaint makes it further evident that bald allegations are made against defendant No 1 (Modi), which resulted into the incident in question… In my view, such reckless allegations without any basis can hardly establish any nexus or help on raising cause of action against defendant No 1.”
The court also noted that the victims’ relatives did not produce any evidence or stated how Modi “is personally liable for the alleged acts or omissions of officials” of the then state government.
