People from many villages in Karnataka refuse to pay electricity bills; says Congress had promised free electricity

Bengaluru: There are reports that villagers are refusing to pay their electricity bills saying that Congress had promised them free electricity.

The report said that villagers in Belagavi refused to pay electricity bills and asked the officials to take away their electricity meters. They said that the Congress had promised them free electricity.

Earlier also many people from villages in Koppal, Kalaburagi and Chitradurga also refused to pay electricity bills. They said that the grand old party had promised them free electricity if the party came to power.

Many have criticized the Congress party for announcing unrealistic promises to get votes. They say that these promises are unsustainable and could wreck havoc on Karnataka’s fiscal strength.

According to reports the election promises made by Congress amounts to more than Rs.60,000 crores a year, which is almost up to its annual fiscal deficit. The party had promised 200 units of free electricity to all households, Rs.2000 per month to women heads of families, Rs.3000 for every graduate and Rs.1,500 for diploma holders, 10kg rice per person and free travel for women in public transport buses.
