New Delhi: A media reported that the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) confessed of under reporting its income in the country to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The BBC has under-reported an amount of Rs.40 crores of income in its tax returns.
The BBC made the confession to CBDT in an email. In the email the news agency accepted that it paid lower taxes than its actual liability. The report said that the BBC now has to follow formal procedures including filing revised returns and settling all outstanding dues, penalties and interest.
On February, the Income Tax Department conducted a survey operation at BBC office in Delhi and Mumbai. They made the survey as part of an investigation into tax evasion by the news company. However, there was widespread criticism against the IT raid and was dubbed as revenge tactic against BBC for releasing the documentary “India: The Modi Question”.
Now the confession about tax evasion has come from the BBC itself.
According to a report, an IT Department official said, “BBC must act as per the stated procedure or face the law. The Department will continue to take action against it until the matter is taken to the logical conclusion.”
