Imphal: Nine persons are said to have lost their lives and ten others injured after fresh violence hit Manipur today morning.
Imphal East East SP Shivkanta Singh said, “Nine people have been killed and ten others injured n fresh violence this morning in Khamenlok. Those killed were all men. The post-mortem is being done. Treatment has also been provided to those injured.”
Officials suspects militants behind the killings and an investigation is going on. The Manipur government has extended the ban on internet till June 15 in view of the present situation in the state.
Manipur has witnessed ethnic clashes since May after the High Court asked the state government to consider including the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes list. However, this was not welcomed by the tribal communities in the hill region of the state including the majority Kuki tribe. A rally organized by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU) to protest against the HC order. The violence followed the clashes during the rally.
