On Tuesday, the Election Commission of India released the schedule for ten Rajya Sabha polls that will take place in Gujarat, West Bengal, and Goa. The polling is scheduled for July 24, with the counting of votes to be conducted on the same day. The ten seats in the Upper House of Parliament will become vacant in July and August as the terms of S Jaishankar from Gujarat, Vinay D Tendulkar from Goa, and Derek O’Brien from West Bengal come to an end.
Vinay D Tendulkar will retire on July 28, while Dineshchandra Jemalbhai Anavadiya, Lokhandwala Jugalsinh Mathurji, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar Krishnaswamy will retire from the Rajya Sabha on August 18. In West Bengal, Derek O’Brien, Sushmita Dev, Sola Sena, Pradip Bhattacharya, Shanta Chhetri, and Sukhendu Sekhar Ray will also retire on August 18.
According to a statement issued by the Election Commission, these ten members will complete their six-year terms in the Upper House between July 28 and August 18. In addition, the EC announced that a by-poll will be conducted on July 24 to fill the vacancy in the Rajya Sabha resulting from the resignation of Luizinho Joaquim Faleiro from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal. Although Luizinho Faleiro’s term was originally set to expire in April 2026, he tendered his resignation in April earlier this year.
