Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Biren N. Singh clarified on Friday that he was not resigning from his post, putting an end to a day-long rumour on the issue. “At this crucial juncture, I wish to clarify that I will not be resigning from the post of Chief Minister,” the Chief Minister said in a tweet.

Earlier today, a considerable gathering of women showed their support for the Manipur Chief Minister near his residence. Responding to their encouragement, the CM came outside his residence in Imphal and acknowledged the crowd. There were speculations that he might meet the state Governor, which fueled rumours of his potential resignation.

Unconfirmed reports suggested that the CM had composed a resignation letter but was convinced by his supporters to discard it. Queries regarding the issue to the chief minister’s office remained unanswered.

The state has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 3, following clashes during a protest rally organized by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU) against the inclusion of Meiteis in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs). Numerous people are currently residing in relief camps, and internet services remain suspended throughout the state. In certain areas, a curfew is in effect. Home Minister Amit Shah previously visited the state and announced various measures aimed at restoring peace.
