New Delhi: In a routine check conducted in Pragati Maidan, Delhi, two individuals on a motorcycle were apprehended, and an amount of ₹85 lakhs was seized from them, suspected to be “hawala money,” according to Delhi Police officials. The seizure has been reported to the income tax department officials and the Enforcement Directorate, who has been alerted and has initiated a probe into the matter.

The two accused, both from Kerala, have been detained for questioning as they failed to provide any documents related to the seized money. Officials stated that the interrogation of both individuals is currently underway. The Delhi Police were conducting routine checks near Pragati Maidan on Tuesday evening when the two bike-borne men attempted to flee upon being signalled to stop by a police constable.

Upon searching the individuals, officials discovered ₹85 lakhs in cash in the possession of the pillion rider. The police are currently investigating whether the recovered cash is indeed hawala money. Further inquiries and investigations are being conducted into the incident.

In another incident last week, four unidentified males reportedly robbed a delivery agent and his associate at gunpoint within the Pragati Maidan tunnel. The victims were in a taxi heading to Gurugram to deliver ₹2 lakhs when the tragedy occurred. According to the Delhi Police Crime Branch, the thieves picked the tunnel as the place for the crime because they expected no passersby to interfere to rescue the victims inside. So far, seven people have been arrested in connection with the crime, with the Crime Branch apprehending five of them. So far, a total of ₹5 lakhs has been collected and further recoveries may be made as the investigation continues.
