Bhopal: Rekha Sharma, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), stated that the commission will soon submit its report on the Manipur incident to the government, possibly within the next one or two days. During her visit to Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, for an awareness programme on the challenges faced by women of denotified tribes, she spoke to the media about her investigations.
Sharma revealed that she had visited Manipur and met with all the relevant parties involved in the incident. This included meeting the victims and women’s organisations working for both communities affected. Based on her findings, she will prepare a report and present it to the government for further action.
Moreover, regarding about the Udupi Medical college video incident in Karnataka, she mentioned that one of their members and BJP leader, Khushbu Sundar, is currently investigating the matter. Sundar has visited the college and is now attempting to meet the victims before submitting her report to the NCW, which will then decide on further actions.
Discussing crime against women in Rajasthan, Sharma criticised the state government for not taking appropriate action promptly. She cited an incident where a woman was shot and thrown into a well, and the police did not respond for about 15 hours. She emphasised that swift action is crucial to protecting potential victims and preventing such tragedies.
When asked about the states with the highest number of reported women atrocities, Sharma mentioned that Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh are among the top states according to NCW’s data.
Regarding Chhattisgarh, she recently visited the state and found that FIRs were not promptly registered for crimes against women. This lack of timely action resulted in incomplete data on women’s atrocities. Sharma highlighted the importance of filing FIRs promptly and asserted that the police need to take immediate action when dealing with such cases.
