Imphal Arch Bishop says there is attempt to make Manipur tribal riots into communal violence; some are deliberately trying to mix religion into the conflict

Imphal: According to a report, Imphal Arch Bishop, Dominc Lumon, said that some are trying to picture the Manipur tribal conflict as communal riots.  He also said that it is suspicious that some are deliberately trying to mix religion in to the issue. The Kuki-Meitei riots need not be seen as an attack against Christians. The bishop also said that many churches in Imphal are safe.

Bishop Dominic Lumon said that in previous years also similar riots had occurred. However, this time the religion is also mixed into the riots. It is believed that even Christian churches belonging to Meitei Christians are also targeted, said the report.

He also added that the Church is ready for any kind of dialogue to restore peace in Manipur.

The Arch Bishop’s statement comes amidst widespread efforts to picture the tribal conflict in Manipur as Hindu-Christian conflict. Yesterday, former Army Chief had said that there is a suspicion about Chinese involvement in the Kuki-Meitei tribal conflict.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that a small relief has come to the conflict in the past few days. The Central Government is still continuing with its peace efforts in the region.
