New Delhi: The Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, strongly criticised the previous UPA Government, accusing it of damaging the telecom sector through scandals like the 2G scam. He emphasised that the sector has experienced disciplined growth during the nine years of the Modi Government. Chandrasekhar pointed out that the robust foundation established by Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s administration was undermined by the UPA, particularly due to corruption-ridden incidents like the 2G scam.
Speaking to the media, Chandrasekhar highlighted that India has now become the world’s largest connected nation, with approximately 830 million Indians having access to the internet. He emphasised the country’s status as the globe’s most extensive internet-connected democracy.
Referring to the UPA’s tenure as a “lost decade,” Chandrasekhar noted the flight of capital and foreign investors during that period. He contrasted this with the NDA government’s focus on improving the ease of doing business, leading to a stable and optimistic investment sentiment. He mentioned that previously, the sector was hindered by a lack of emphasis on service quality, the struggling state-owned BSNL, and the prevalence of imported mobile phones.
Chandrasekhar emphasised that the current climate is witnessing substantial foreign investments flowing into the country, and India has emerged as a significant mobile phone manufacturer, even exporting devices to other nations. He pointed out that India is making remarkable progress in 5G technologies, boasting the second-highest number of 5G rollouts globally, and has already established a roadmap for future 6G technology.
