Mumbai: The Mumbai Police’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has interrogated Chetan Singh, a Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable accused of killing four individuals, including a 57-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), aboard the Jaipur-Mumbai Express train. Officials reported that Chetan, currently in the custody of the Mumbai Government Railway Police (GRP), underwent extensive questioning by the ATS for several hours.

The accused RPF constable, Chetan Singh, allegedly opened fire on Assistant Sub-Inspector Tikaram Meena and three passengers while the Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express was in motion near Palghar station in Maharashtra on July 31.

A high-level committee consisting of five members has been formed to investigate the incident. Over 20 individuals have provided statements to the Borivali GRP. A senior GRP official stated, “Police are contacting those who were present on the train during the incident to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation. People have been urged to come forward to establish a clear sequence of events.”

Following the occurrence, Singh had been arrested, and an FIR was registered against him at Borivali Government Railway Police (GRP) in Mumbai under sections 302, Arms Act, and Railway Police Act.

Chief PRO Western Railway, Sumit Thakur, previously stated, “In an unfortunate incident on the Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express, a police constable shot his colleague, ASI Tika Ram, who was the escort-in-charge. The motive behind this act is yet to be determined. Tragically, ASI Tika Ram and three civilians lost their lives. The constable was apprehended by RPF/Bhayandar. Further investigation is underway.” Western Railway announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased passengers and ASI Tikaram in accordance with service rules.

Considering concerns raised by Singh’s legal representative regarding his mental well-being, the GRP has enlisted the expertise of a psychiatrist to gain deeper insights into his mental state. Moreover, the GRP has forwarded two videos of the shooting incident to the forensics department to analyse Singh’s utterances during the crime. Further details about the situation are pending.
