Ujjain: A significant multitude of devotees converged at the Mahakaleshwar temple in the Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh to extend their prayers during the fifth ‘Shravan Somvar’ celebration. In the early hours, devotees began lining up, eager to seek the divine blessings of Lord Shiva at the temple.

An integral part of the occasion was the special ‘Bhasma Aarti,’ a renowned ritual at the temple. This sacred ceremony, known for its symbolic offering of ashes, took place during the auspicious ‘Brahma Muhurta’ between 3:30 and 5:30 in the morning.

Gaurav Sharma, the temple’s priest, elucidated the sequence of events. The Bhasma Aarti, a sanctifying bath, and Panchamrit Mahabhishek, featuring anointing with milk, curd, ghee, honey, and fruit juices, were performed on Baba Mahakal. Following this, the deity was adorned with bhang and sandalwood, followed by the draping of resplendent attire. The subsequent Bhasma Aarti resonated with the beats of drums and the resounding call of conch shells.

The ongoing month, ‘Sawan’ or ‘Shravan,’ occupies the fifth spot in the Hindu lunar calendar, carrying immense sanctity. Each Monday within this period is deemed highly propitious for fasting and seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva. As per religious convictions, the Shravan month holds special significance in the heart of Lord Shiva. Worship during this period is believed to promptly alleviate troubles. This year, the Sawan phase spans 59 days, from July 4 to August 31.

An additional observance during the Shravan-Bhado month involves the ceremonial procession (‘sawari’) of Baba Mahakal, usually taking place on Mondays. The procession is thought to offer insight into the populace’s state as Baba Mahakal embarks on a city tour. Devotees gather along the roadsides, patiently awaiting the procession, considering themselves blessed to catch a glimpse of Mahakal.
