Shimla: In the past 48 hours, the Air Force has successfully conducted rescue operations, saving over 780 individuals amidst sudden floods that struck Himachal Pradesh. As dam water levels surged, local residents were swiftly airlifted from the valley to safety. Tragically, the flood has claimed 71 lives, with approximately 20 people still unaccounted for. Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, conducted aerial assessments of the flood-ravaged regions, specifically focusing on Indora and Fatehpur in the Kangra district.
CM Sukhu shared distressing news that the state has suffered an estimated ₹10,000 crores worth of damage due to the relentless rainfall. The extensive rescue operation is being skillfully orchestrated under the guidance of the National State Disaster Response Force, as well as the dedicated efforts of the Army and Air Forces. A comprehensive assistance package is being prepared for the affected areas, encompassing financial compensation and essential relief provisions for those impacted by this disaster.
The Chief Minister emphasised his directive to the administrative teams to ensure that individuals sheltered in relief camps receive the necessary and attentive care. Simultaneously, efforts are underway in Uttarakhand to restore the vital Badrinath-Kedarnath road, a significant lifeline for the region. Meanwhile, in Punjab, districts including Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, and Rupnagar are grappling with severe inundation following the deliberate release of surplus water from the Draka and Pong dams.
