The eagerly awaited accomplishment of Chandrayaan-3’s gentle touchdown is poised to take place tomorrow, marking a moment of immense national pride. The anticipated soft landing is anticipated to occur at 6:04 pm on Wednesday. During the initial phase, ISRO had outlined a soft landing window spanning from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, a timeframe subsequently refined to the precise moment of 6:04 pm. The conclusive success of the final deboosting manoeuvre has positioned the lander a mere 25 kilometres from its intended destination.
In an endeavour to address the challenges that were encountered during Chandrayaan-2, ISRO has undertaken meticulous preparations for this mission. Following the soft landing, the lunar surface will be graced by the rover carried by the Chandrayaan probe. A two-week interval will ensue before the commencement of the comprehensive study phase. Delineated by an expansive region spanning 9.6 square kilometers at the Moon’s South Pole, this landing area significantly surpasses the modest 500-square-meter plan outlined in Chandrayaan-2.
Initiated on July 14, the probe navigated its course to attain the moon’s orbit by the 22nd. Subsequently, a meticulously orchestrated sequence of five orbital reduction stages is being executed to ensure a safe descent onto the lunar surface. The operational control of this intricate operation resides with the ISRO Telemetry, Tracking, and Command Network ground station located in Bengaluru.
