Srinagar: In Jammu and Kashmir, a significant stride towards women’s representation has been achieved with the introduction of special reserved seats for women in local bodies. These reserved seats are designated for women in both municipal and panchayat elections, totalling 358 seats.
This pivotal decision to reserve seats for women predates the broader movement for women’s empowerment in the region. The Election Commission has confirmed the reservation of 358 wards exclusively for women in the forthcoming union territory elections. In Srinagar Municipal Corporation, the Chief Electoral Officer has recommended the reservation of 25 out of a total of 74 wards for women. Similarly, in Jammu Municipal Corporation, 25 wards are reserved for women, 10 for Scheduled Castes, and 2 for Scheduled Tribes.
The women of Jammu and Kashmir are optimistic about the positive impact of this decision on the development of the union territory. Hina Bhat, Vice Chairperson of the Khadi & Village Industries Board in Kashmir, emphasised that this move represents not only a significant step towards women’s empowerment but also an opportunity to demonstrate the invaluable contributions that women can make to society.
This reservation for women marks a commendable milestone, especially considering the historical underrepresentation of women in previous governments. It is worth noting that this initiative was introduced under the leadership of the BJP. Leaders like Rashida from the BJP have voiced their support, highlighting the manifold advantages it brings for women, ensuring their rightful representation, and enabling them to work more effectively for the betterment of women and society as a whole.
The upcoming municipal elections in Jammu and Kashmir are slated to take place in October and November this year, promising a more inclusive and representative future for the region.
