Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Police took a significant step on Wednesday by filing a First Information Report (FIR) against Amit Malviya, the head of BJP’s IT department. Malviya stands accused of allegedly misrepresenting a statement made by state minister Udhayanidhi Stalin regarding Sanatan Dharma and disseminating false information.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Malviya had said that Udhayanidhi’s recent remark on ‘Sanatana Dharma’ was a call for “genocide” of 80 per cent of the population that follows it.

“He (Udhayanidhi) is of the opinion that it (Sanatana Dharma) must be eradicated and not merely opposed. In short, he is calling for genocide of 80% population of Bharat, who follow Sanatan Dharma,” Malviya said in a tweet on September 2.

The FIR was registered in Tamil Nadu’s Trichy following a complaint lodged by a DMK functionary, KAV Dhinakaran. Malviya has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 153, 153 (A), 504, and 505 (1) (b).

Udhayanidhi’s original statement, where he expressed the view that Sanatan Dharma should be “eradicated”, claiming it opposes principles of equality and social justice, has ignited heated debates. He made these remarks during his speech at the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association in Chennai on September 2.
