NEW DELHI: Bharath Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak discussed international matters over the phone on Friday. It is reported that the prime ministers discussed the Israel-Hamas war and the ongoing bilateral Bharath-UK trade deal negotiations.

This is the first time that the two leaders have held talks since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Narendra Modi and Rishi Sunak discussed the need to de-escalate tensions in the Israel-Hamas conflict and the importance of protecting civilians in both Israel and Palestine.

“The leaders discussed the deeply distressing situation in the Middle East and condemned Hamas’s attacks on Israel,” a spokesperson from Downing Street said. They reiterated that Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people and reflected on the need to de-escalate tensions in the wider region.

Sunak asked to ensure that aid reaches the people of Gaza and informed that Britain has started the steps to do so.

Modi and Sunak then discussed the importance of improving trade relations between the two countries and the steps to be taken in this regard.

Modi and Sunak also addressed the recent progress in negotiations for the UK-Bharath Free Trade Agreement (FTA). “They agreed on the importance of securing an ambitious deal that benefits both sides,” the spokesperson said.

Sunak congratulated the Indian cricket team for their good performance in the Cricket World Cup and expressed hope that the England team will perform well in the upcoming Test series in Bharath in January.
