Supreme Court’s first woman judge, Fathima Beevi, passes away at 96

Thiruvananthapuram: Retd. Justice Fathima Beevi, passed away at Kollam today. She was aged 96. Fathima Beevi was the first female judge of the Supreme Court of the country. According to a report, she was also the first female justice of an apex court of a country in Asia. She also served as Governor of Tamil Nadu. She met her end at a private hospital in Kollam.

Fathima Beevi hails from Pandalam in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala and did her schooling at Catholicate High School in Pathanamthitta and went to pursue her degree in science from University College in Thiruvananthapuram. She took her law degree from Government Law College and was enrolled as a lawyer in 1950, according to a report.

Rising through the ranks of the justice system, she became a High Court judge in 1983 and became a Justice at the Supreme Court in 1989. After retiring from Supreme Court, she served as member of National Human Rights Commission. She was appointed as Governor of Tamil Nadu and served at the gubernatorial position from 1997 to 2001.

In 2023, Government of Kerala awarded her the Kerala Prabha Award, the second highest honor given by the state.
